So after the winding mountainous train journey I arrived at Saint Jean! While on the train I met an Italian guy Gino and although my Italian is rusty with a lot of gestures and broken English and some Spanish we are communicating!
We got in at 19:30 and the pilgrim office was closed for 45 minutes so went to find an albergue with gino and another Italian Giovanni! We didn’t have to look far and a few doors away for 10 euro we were booked! It was a wee house run by Christina down stairs was mainly full of cats and upstairs just a few rooms of bunk-beds but clean and homely. All good but then come the list of rules:
No shoes
Back before 22:30
No wet clothes in the bedroom
No food in the bedroom
No getting up until 6
This last rule is an issue for me and currently it’s 5am I’m wide awake and would love nothing more than to get on with my first day walking! My back ache doesn’t let’s sleep this long normally and now I’m counting down the minutes to start.
After securing a bed we went for grub and my first experience of the pilgrim menu for 12 euro. Started was chicken noodle soup exactly like nona used to make and sent my brain into a time warp. This was followed my chicken and potato in a buttery garlic mushroom sauce and was very nice followed by a Citrous tart! All was very nice and was had with a small lager, bread and water.
After food we went back to the pilgrim office and I got my first stamp and headed back to our beds. Did some quick prep but after being tired from travel got my head down!
