Day 2 Roncesvalles to Ares

So this morning we headed out in darkness granted that didn’t last long less than 45 minutes! Then target was Pamplona which was 42k away!

Let me first start by explaining on the map this is primarily all downhill and assuming the map wasn’t knocked up by an absolute bastard all would be fairly easy going. It was not it was up and down all day and not like undulating this was steep 500m climbs followed by steep 500m descents and this would have been ok had it not been for the 40 degree heat which granted is bronzing me nicely but does not make it easy on a sweaty mess like me! So even with tanking water to the extent I had to pee every 5k it was not easy!

Now comes to my second issue and its not the topology map douche bag it’s what can only be describe as a son of a bitch who marks the sign posts along the camino with distances this almighty prick saw it in his infinite power to mark signs so nicely with 2k when in fact it was 7k. This may not sound bad but in the strong heat your entire body is trying to get to the next village or water supply even when like me having a 3l camelbak and the bullshit signs just further anger you not motivate you.

With the intense heat and much longer than originally thought distance and the fact that my Italian companions hate stopping unless its to dip their toes in a river I know have 3 granted very small blisters to show for my efforts. Two of which were easily dispatched with a compeed.

However it’s made me rethink the 40k plus attempts unless the topology gets easier or my feet and me condition better to the Heat!

I also met a gordie lad today tho he was stopping very early on so no idea if I will bump into him again. We walked and decided although only 5k away from Pamplona to call it a rest in Ares. We are staying in an old church building which still has a chapel.

So the plan is to just see how it goes tomorrow and try and get used to it all better before I start stretching the legs!
