So last nights hotel was the worst we have ever had on our trip and the reasons sound petty but we are now accustomed to a standard so to kick off it was 45 euro which isn’t ridiculously over priced and I know pickings are slim but it was an unmanned hotel with no reception, it was quite run down but still clean. Good size and facilities were ok but here is the outrage no wifi. And I know that sounds bad but it’s 2014 and every other hotel has it and they advertised they had wifi throughout! And then if I want already pissed off about he lack of tinternet the TV was in parental lock mode so you couldn’t use the TV guide or menus to change the audio to English. Something we have been able to do every night so far. The combination of the two issues and I was happy to throw my toys out the pram. But it was only one night so we live and we learn. We got our bikes back from the lock up and were on our way it was very overcast and gray when we kicked off although still quite warm. I think the initial evaluation would be our legs were shagged. As we peddled up our first ascent of the day I was peddling squares and both of us have sort arse issues! It also became quite apparent we were cycling in a cloud or harr and the air was very moist and it meant while cycling we were soaking. Bee were also warned that there are large stages today with gaps as in parts we were away from the main camino and they were right by the time we found an open cafe we were very close to Portomarin we stopped and had a coffee to warm up just next to the start of the reservoir. After a very nice decent into portomarin they view is really nice just a pity it was overcast so we stopped to take a few pics and indeed mosts of today’s pics.
We got back on the bikes and started then second big stage of ascending today’s terrain was aver mixed bag but with two main elongated ascents for 15k a time the rest was undulating but as we were peddling squares and noticeably weak cycling so a lot slower than our normal pace but not utter crap. As the camino finally joined our road there in also it’s glory the worst part of the camino for many especially walkers and I hated the last 100k last year as you are joined by the Disney-grinos a phrase that was coined last year for the utter douche bags that now fill the camino. There are the bare minimum slackers and school kids that just do the last 100k the minimum allowed to get your compostela certificate. These guys will be using every trick in the book to slack and skip the real meaning and joy of the camino. Normally there with their tiny bags and clean shoes smelling fresh and skipping up the camino singing songs, listening to music as a group and generally being disrespectful to those completing the real deal. It’s also very noticeable the mood on the camino changes and people are no longer as friendly. Well this year I was glad to be cycling so I could whizz past these people. Today’s ride was relatively short being just 30 miles and we reached Palas Del Rei and got checked in.
Tomorrow is the final day and we hope to reach Santiago by lunch time at best guess it’s 70km to finish!
There are not to many pics today as frankly there wasn’t much good to look at and I was tired and the Disney- Grinos don’t deserve to feature in my pics but I did enjoy cycling behind them and run if my bell to scare the shit out of them;
