Day 11 – Vega De Valcarce to Sarria

So today’s missions was simple and that was battle with the mountain before us and ascend to victory. This will be our last big mountain and leaves us 2 days away from Santiago and our finish. So after breakfast In our hotel we ventured towards the mountain it’s started gradually at first but soon became steeper and for elongated periods so we were defiantly working hard to make progress. Thankfully in the cooler early morning weather but as we reached the top of the first part we stopped for coffee and good and soon found the up and down terrain really was up and down the up being the main issue so more slow progress and now were sweating buckets as the sun kicks in more. The views were very pretty but there was more focus on retaining breathing at that altitude. Finally after what was 2 and a half hours of climbing we had reached the highest part and the downhill was to begin and it was ace! Nice flowing roads and averaging 30 miles an hour and according to the map it was all downhill to Sarria. Well that was bullshit and we had to peddle back up to freewheel for a bit and do the same again every k or two all the way. It’s fair to say were pretty knackered today after arguably our hardest day or relentless climbing but were done for the day and will rest up and continue as we are now about 120km out from Santiago so should be there for Friday.

Today’s blog is a bit short as I’m on a bars wifi typing it up as we haven’t got our hotels wifi yet. But were doing well and are looking forward to a lie in on Saturday!

Pics from today are mainly from the top of the mountain:
