We made an attempt to be out before 7 today only to be scuppered by a useless bloke on the hotel reception desk that clearly found clicking his mouse a challenge but we eventually got his knickers untwisted and let us check out. We decided for the first part to stay on the camino and after finding a patisserie and a pan au chocolate has inhaled we made good progress in the cooler weather. The Camino was rough in parts but apart from a few hills relatively flat. This is our first day in the Meseta section it’s pretty flat but very little shade and very hot. This section is often skipped and is a bitch for walkers due to the heat, bigger gaps between towns, long straight flat sections where you just get cooked by the sun but for us it’s cracking.
The camino is certainly busy and full of people to try and get around but apart from a few thin paths we had no problems, however slowing down to pass people was a bit of a drag so was happy to find the road and our aim of the day sign posted. We were making great time and although hot and sweaty work we seem to be getting stronger so all is well and after 42 miles done today by 12:40 we were feet up and frosted cervesa sipped. Whilst that may seem early the sun after that in this area is ridiculous we could feel the heat just off the road coming into Fromista and if you don’t want to fry you have to get out the heat. We are hoping to clear the Meseta after the next two days and will possibly have time to have a rest day in Leon if all goes well.
