Day 1 well mostly technically speaking my we had already walked 3k the day before and we now started on the camino near our hotel. I have to agree with Lauren that leaving a 4 star hotel at 6 am is a bit daft but the camino has its own schedule and we needed to join it. Today should be around 30k hence the early start.
Under the cover of street lights we meandered around the docks and followed the water for some time. Switching to single Forrest track or small roads. We assumed in daylight it would look great but in darkness we were just concerned with getting in some easy kilometers. It was a standard city exit with industrial zones but the path did well to keep us in the to a minimum. After 10k we found a small cafe. I asked for toast and coffee as normal but today confusion was on the cards, I have asked for the same thing almost everyday so not sure why today was different. We got the coffee but the toast came just drizzled with olive oil. Was still tasty but not quite what we wanted. We were making good time and the hills beckoned but nothing too bad through it was enough to make me leak sweat. We were making good time and soon we came across a cafe just about 19k so stopped for more grub this time an Aquarius and a ham bocadilo. All was fine at this point until we got up. Lauren started getting pain in her right foot from by the little toe. She kept walking on it tho and was keeping pace pretty well but it was clear it was causing some issues. We had a sprinkling of rain today and called for the bag rain covers to go on today but apart from that mainly cloudy and sun breaking through from time to time. As we got over the hill we could see the big blue bridge so assumed we were close to our target for the day. We walked on and eventually got to the bridge not the blue one but a stone bridge that lead directly to Pontedeume we soon seen signs for the albergue and arrived to find it was already full. This was 20 beds which is about the average for albergues on this route. This presented and issue not just for tonight but for accommodation on our whole trip. We read the CSJ guide and followed there instructions to find further accommodation. The first pension we went in was already fully booked but we went across the street and hey still had rooms left 40 euro for a room with 3 single beds and a tv with a comunal bathroom between 2 rooms. Bed for the night sorted at least but rapidly changed our game plan for the camino into requiring to book hotels. A lot of the villages and towns we are going to really do not have huge capacities and it means our 4 day plan is looking like a 5 day plan and potentially taxis required after certain points to take us to near towns off the camino that have more rooms. So tomorrow instead of it being a 34k day it will be a 20k day which is probably just as well as since we have arrived Lauren’s foot has been causing her a lot of pain. We are somewhat down but not quite out.
