Day 1 – Oviedo – San Juan de Villapanda – 31.5k

So we got in to Oviedo at 22.35 and soon found our hotel and checked in. It was very nice and a shame to leave it at 5.45am to get on the Camino.

Although the hotel was on the Camino we felt duty bound to head to the cathedral first.

As you can see it was very moist. Making Karen’s first day on Camino a belter. We soon picked up the Camino and with help of the wise pilgrims app due to appalling signage leaving the city.

The pavement was super slippy and some off camber downhill pavement claimed Karen as she tumbled backwards but thankfully with limited damage.

She soldiered on and we made good progress but as promised it was very up and down all day and we were slower in the fluctuating rainy day.

It seemed to stop raining then start just after you put your jacket away. We made progress and found our first coffee stop to warm up.

There were certainly some lovely sites but the rain was making it all tricky and our aggressive first day certainly contained some big hills.

I would like to say it was a convincingly strong day but it was a wet sweaty slog.

The last 5k was rough going and I’m sure Karen did not enjoy it but we finally wound up at the albergue which was a donative so 5 euro and donative food too so much cheapness however the thing that stand is the chat with fellow pilgrims with a fantastic view even if the weather is not playing ball. Let’s see how Karen gets on in her first albergue?
