Day 18 Hospital de Orbigo to Rabanal del Camino

Today kicked off very early at 4:45 I had one mission in mind to walk the 35k to Rabanal due to its closeness to the Cruz de Ferro which is a very famous part of the camino which I will reach very early tomorrow.

Today’s path took me through the large town of Astorga now this is where the maps and guide book lies. The path today was supposed to be 35k but it’s just places dots for towns and cities and of course these aren’t the size of the dot you have to walk across them and today’s was between 3 and 4k making today’s kilometres more and the total length of the camino being a lie as of course cities like Leon or Burgos are not dots. I will include the map of today’s walk so you can see what I mean.

The camino is defiantly becoming more green and it’s nice to see the scenery changing again.

After more close to 38k today it was a long day but found a nice albergue and my feet seem to still be on the mend and very close for tomorrow. It’s Is roughly 238km to Santiago now.

The Cruz de Ferro is a cross atop of a hill where pilgrims leave stones, many pilgrims myself included have been walking with small stones in there bag. These stones are symbols of a burden of some sort they have been carrying on the camino and life and wish to leave on the camino. I am not goon to go into all the details of my stones I have a few as I feel this is possibly the most deeply personal thing about the camino but one of my stones is for my mum not that I feel it’s a burden and I will certainly not be leaving it behind but I feel certain parts of the past namely the crap stuff can be left. One of my closest friends went to Caerphilly mountain very close to where I was born and where my mum was laid to rest and got me this stone. So it means a lot to me. I have no doubt tomorrow will be fairly emotional.
