Mission - Get There

So as always I don't do things by halves getting to Saint Jean to start is never a simple process. It's a small town in the mountains on the French border.

So I worked half day on Friday and as I was giving dad my car for the 6 weeks he agreed to drive me into Sophia Gardens so I could get the luxurious National Express bus via Heathrow to Gatwick. Surprisingly very timely and I got to Gatwick at 11 pm. I booked myself the Yotel Hotel which are the smallest pod rooms. You can barely swing a cat but perfect for my needs for basically 6 hours.

Actually slept pretty well, then had a good flight only 2 hours to Bilbao.
Some suprise last minute plans my line manager Darren who lives near Santander picked me up from the Airport and took me to get some supplies and after a good in person catch up, which did feel a bit strange as we spend so much time on teams meetings normally. He dropped me off at the bus station.

So then the bus to Bayonne, it's such a lovely road that carves through the mountains. Have actually been here before on my Motorbike a few years back.

However something had to go wrong and the bus was already 20 mins delayed, so in the planning i knew this one could be dodgy. There was only 40 mins between when I was supposed to arrive and the train station was a km away from where I get dropped off.

So I get off now 30 min late and start speed walking. I arrive now sweating to discover the train is delayed so was all flapping for nothing.

I meet an English girl called Rafi on the train and we discover we are booked in the same albergue so we are instantly Camino buddies. We got booked into the albergue then realised the pilgrims office is closing at pm at 19:54 so we race over there and we get out stamps. Rafi got her she'll and passport, her's is a last minute decided to do the Camino 3 weeks ago job. So has many questions. The pilgrims office basically said to book ahead for Roncesvalles so that's booked. Anyway I'm knacked is 21:45 and I'm up to leave at half 6 so I'm signing off. But I'm here and ready to go. Much excitement to begin.

Enjoy some pics of Saint Jean Pied De Port.
